The Hudson Yard potential casino developer, Wynn Resorts, has agreed to commit 1% of its gross gaming revenue to the community. After seeing intense opposition to the possible location of their new casino, Wynn-NYC is trying to smooth over the opposition.
The pledge would give the local community programs $197 million over 10 years. They have also agreed to donate $6.4 million to charitable groups before the project begins. However, all the community support hangs on getting awarded one of the NYC casino licenses up for grabs.
The local community board and the Friends of the High Line, a neighborhood group, have both opposed the casino project in Hudson Yard for various reasons.
The Wynn New York City Community Foundation will have a $4 million annual budget. Its board will include community representatives to ensure philanthropic requests are managed effectively, aiming to enhance the quality of life in West Chelsea.
Alex Zablocki, executive director of the Public Housing Community Fund, said, “This partnership presents an unprecedented opportunity to uplift residents by providing access to meaningful careers, not just jobs,”
Proposed Casino Details
The proposed casino in Hudson Yard will include the following if the project is approved.
- An 80-story tower overlooking the Hudson River for the gaming facility and hotel.
- Office buildings, apartment towers, and a spacious 5.6-acre park
- 5,000 permanent jobs
The Friends of the High Line group released a statement saying throwing money at the community will not garnish their support.
NYC Domestic Casinos
There is currently only one casino in New York City (Resorts World), while there are four other commercial casinos in upstate NY. Robert Williams, executive director of the New York State Gaming Commission, has said that there are 11 proposals, but the most important factor for any bid is quantitative and related to economic development.
Online NYC Casinos
In addition to the one brick-and-mortar casino inside the city limits, residents and tourists can access NY online casinos that have been accepting players since the early 1990s. Since no federal or state gambling laws forbid gambling online, players are free to wager online.
Popular online casino games include blackjack, slots, video poker, roulette, baccarat, and specialty games. Some of the most trusted online casinos also offer live dealer games that typically include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and Super 6.
